Frequently Asked Questions ( FAQ )

InterVideo WinDVR
1.

Q: Why is there no sound with WinDVR?

A: There are a wide variety of reasons why there is no sound.

a) Verify that the speakers and sound cards are correctly installed and connected. Verify whether you can get sound output in other Windows applications, such as Windows Media Player.

b) Verify that the audio cable is connected between the Line-out connector on the green AV/Tuner Box and the line-in connector on your sound card or audio device.

c) In WinDVR, go to the setup dialog and select the "Recording" tab. Verify the that audio input is set to Line-in on your sound card.

d) If you can hear sound in other applications, upgrade the drivers for your sound card or onboard audio device. Download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's web site for your sound card or mainboard, as appropriate.

e) If this doesn't solve the problem, then verify that the WDM drivers are properly installed. Open the Device Manager applet and verify that four "NVIDIA WDM" drivers are properly installed and functioning. See Figure 1, below.

2.
Q: When I use WinDVR to record programs or when in Timeshifting mode, why are the audio and video out of sync? Usually the audio is delayed.

A: First, verify that you have the latest software. Check your green Compro software CD for the words "Version 1.1." If your Compro CD is not version 1.1 or later, please contact us via e-mail or support request form for the latest software.

If the Personal Cinema drivers and WinDVR files are up to date, the problems maybe be related to your PC system and drivers.

Download and install the latest audio or sound drivers for your sound card or onboard audio device. You should download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's web site for your system, sound card, or mainboard, as appropriate. If possible, update your mainboard chipset drivers using drivers from your mainboard manufacturer's web site, e.g. Intel, ASUS, Soyo, etc.

Next uninstall the NVIDIA WDM driver and WinDVR application using the Windows Add/Remove Programs Control Panel applet. Finally, reinstall the WDM driver and WinDVR application, in this order.

3.
Q: What should I do if I see the message, "Can't find hardware"?

A: First, verify that all cables, especially the green bus cable between the graphics board and AV/Tuner Box are connected securely. If the green cable is loose, shutdown your system and turn off the power before reinserting the cable.

4.
Q. What should I do if there is no TV signal on the screen after starting WinDVR?

A: Check the following items:

Verify that the video input cable from your TV antenna or cable TV connection is securely attached to the AV/Tuner Box.

Check the video out cable between the AV/Tuner Box and TV set.

In the Setup (Properties) dialog of WinDVR, select the TV tab and check the Tuner options, including Input and Tuning Mode. Be sure to set the Video Standard parameter properly, e.g., NTSC_M if you are in the USA.

5.

Q: What should I do if I can't hear audio while using WinDVR?

A: Check the following items:

Verify that the audio cable is connected to the line-out port on the AV/Tuner Box and the line-in port on your PC sound card.

Verify that the speaker power is on (if applicable) and check the volume setting.

Verify that your sound card driver is properly installed in your system. You may need to download and install updated sound card drivers from your sound card manufacturer's web site.

Check the Windows audio volume settings in the Control Panel, i.e., Control Panel -> "Sounds and Multimedia."

Open the WinDVR Setup (Properties) dialog and select the Record tab. In the Input Devices block, verify that the Audio input device is correctly set for your sound card and the audio input source is set to "Line In."

6.

Q: What should I do if there is no audio output while playing, recording, or timeshifting TV programs?

A: Generally, the steps are the same as the question immediately above. Additionally, adjust sound card recording volume setting.

7.
Q: How do I reduce the amount of disk space used for recording or timeshifting?

A: The easiest way is to reduce the Recording quality level settings. When recording TV programs or capturing home video tapes, selecting DVD-quality settings is not necessary. You should select a quality setting that matches the input signal, e.g., S-Video quality settings is appropriate for recording broadcast or cable TV programs.

8.

Q: How do I activate WinDVR?

A: Be sure all the cables are properly connected between the AV/Tuner Box and your computer. Also verify that the video and WDM drivers, DirectX 8, and WinDVR software are installed to your system.

9.
Q: Can I record video to a standard VCD format file?

A: Yes. Open the Setup (Properties) dialog and select the Record tab. In the Record Quality settings, select the Customized radio button and then select VCD NTSC or VCD PAL as appropriate.

10.

11.
Q: After pressing the EPG button, an EPG window appears but there is no EPG content in it. What do I do?

A: EPG, electronic programming guide, is an online service that requires an Internet connection. If you wish to use EPG your PC must be connect to the Internet.

12.
Q: How do I return to watching the current TV program after I'm done browsing the EPG?

A: Press the EPG button on the WinDVR control panel again to return to the current TV program.

13.
Q: Would I see better-quality recordings if I use the highest recording quality settings?

A: Recording quality greatly depends on the source feed. Using the highest recording settings when recording analog TV signals will usually not result in higher visual or audio quality.

14.
Q: What is Timeshifting?

A: With Timeshifting, you can pause or replay live TV without interrupting the ongoing recording session.

15.
Q: What is the difference between Timeshifting and Recording?

A: Timeshifting allows you to skip commercials, perform instant replays, or pause live TV without interrupting your recording session. Timeshifted programs are not permanently recorded. Recording allows you to simply record a program in real time and play it back later.

16.
Q: The Timeshifting function doesn't work. How do I fix it?

A: When the Timeshifting function is active, the system plays the TV program while simultaneously recording it in the background. It can use a significant portion of your system resources. Try setting the video recording quality to a lower resolution and close other applications on your PC. If Timeshifting still doesn't work, restart your computer and try again.

17.
Q: How can I improve video smoothness when watching TV with the Timeshifting function?

A: Try these steps.

1. [Windows 98 and Me only] Enable IDE DMA transfer mode by using the following procedure:
Open Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager and select "Disk drives." View Properties of the disk drive on which you installed WinDVR and verify that DMA is enabled.

2. Update your motherboard chipset drivers, including the IDE Bus driver.

3. Select lower recording quality. MPEG-1 quality is recommend.

18.
Q: Why does the CPU utilization increase during Timeshifting?

A: While Timeshifting, WinDVR simultaneously encodes and decodes the video stream, causing CPU utilization to increase.

19.
Q: How can I avoid the crackling noise while scanning channels?

A: Open the WinDVR Setup (Properties) dialog and select the Record tab. Verify that the audio input devices source is set to Line-in.

20.
